Beyond Our Four Walls

Moving Arts offers a range of vibrant programs which move students to explore their creativity in the community and beyond. From farming to gaming to film, Moving Arts partners with multiple organization to support our youth and young adults in their pursuits beyond our curriculum.

Nourishing Our Community

The Healthy Meals Program provides free nutritious, vegetarian, locally-sourced suppers to all Moving Arts Española students and family members. Purchased from family and heritage farms in Rio Arriba County, meals are prepared fresh daily by Sophia Ribas, the in-house chef, and served buffet-style throughout the school year.

Our Future Health Relies on Sustainable Farming

The farmers of tomorrow are the youth of today. This program introduces students to healthy environmental practices and addresses food insecurity. Moving Arts has created a micro Controlled Environment Agriculture system that produces greens and herbs for student meals. Our vision includes construction of a modular greenhouse and aquaponics system to facilitate technology-supported farming and educate the food producers of tomorrow.

FARMERS OF TOMORROW is funded in part by Illinois No. 3 Foundation.

Gamification Promotes Intrinsic Motivation

Mars Odyssey is a gamified learning project that expands student’s access to technology and online safety. Within a Mars landing narrative, students will use CAD, 3D printing, coding, engineering, website design, digital media production, and modern agricultural training. Hands-on creative challenges foster team work, creativity, as well as analytical and critical thinking. Through creative learning experiences, Mars Odyssey is geared to promote intrinsic motivation to engage students and increase their overall academic performance. This project is being developed in partnership with the state MESA Program and Española Valley High School.

MARS ODYSSEY is funded by the Google Kids Initiative and New Mexico Community Trust Technology Grant.

Lights! Camera! Action!

Moving Arts is proud to serve as a hub for Film Prize Junior New Mexico, a statewide short film competition for middle and high school students. Mentored by industry professionals, students will venture into the world of visual storytelling and learn the value of teamwork as they develop a concept, create a script, film, edit and produce a short  film to be entered into statewide  competition. Specific skills taught include storyboarding, lighting, and filming techniques to produce a compelling story. From pre to post production, students learn first-hand how to create a professional short film. Participants are also given the opportunity to act in their own film and support other teams in completing their film.

Pivoting Justice-Involved Youth Trajectory with Holistic Support

Moving Arts is leading a community-based pilot program to address the lack of opportunity for justice-involved youth to pivot toward a more productive life.

We will utilize a customized process of interventions based on restorative justice principles. The approach is designed to meet young people’s needs and actualize their strengths through therapeutic intervention, family-centered education, mentorship, community service, and internships.

PIVOT partners include: the New Mexico First Judicial District Attorney’s office, The UNM Department of Criminology and Sociology, regional Clinical Behavioral Health providers, New Mexico Children Youth and Families Department CYFD, and the Española Public School District.
