MOVING ARTS | Setting Hearts Ablaze illustrates how creativity and artistic expression can aid children in transitioning from feelings of fear and hurt to feelings of safety and trust in challenging situations.
Children can achieve physical, mental, and emotional healing through engaging activities such as dance, music, painting, photography, video production, computer graphics, and gymnastics. Art provides them with a platform for self-expression and broadening their perspectives.
The film features poignant interviews, stunning visuals, and a compelling narrative piece created by a former Moving Arts student, now a teacher, highlighting the significant issue of grandparents and extended family raising children in Espanola, where up to 60% of students in the Rio Arriba County school district are affected. Furthermore, the film includes an impressive dance performance by a former student, showcasing the limitations of traditional teaching methods.
As the story unfolds, viewers witness how Moving Arts Espanola's philosophy that 'art is medicine' is deeply ingrained in the hearts of founders Roger Montoya, a 2019 CNN Hero, and Salvador Ruiz, along with the dedicated educators, former students, and volunteers. The film portrays a vibrant community where creativity and experiential learning are both fostered and celebrated.

Mural Unveiling
The mural, titled “El Portador de Semillas” or “The Seed Bearer”, will be officially unveiled June 14. The celebration will include light refreshments from 2-4 p.m. at NRGNHA, 109 E. Paseo de Oñate, Española.
The mural was commissioned by the Northern Rio Grande National Heritage Area (NRGNHA), for the Española site. This mural, depicting an Abuelo teaching the next generation about planting, serves as a powerful metaphor for Masterful Mentorship and the importance of imparting our knowledge to the next generation, a message that resonates deeply with the community.
